Looking Inward: A Self-Assessment

How does the process and outcome of tattoos affect the way teens are perceived?

The results of my findings tell me that I am a good person to the people that surround me and love me for who I am, but I am a rebellious, low life teenager to people who don't know my personality, and/or think tattoos ruin a person's skin, and ruin it quicker as a teenager. I have learned why tattoos are a big part of my life. I will never get rid of it! Unless I spent thousands of dollars, and double the pain from when I got the tattoo. I learned how to make a commitment and show my dedication to my passions. I will love my squadron, and once I leave,  I will return to give back, thanks to my 104 tattoo. I learned how to love myself and my family with my flower tattoo. I learned to continue my music skills with my bass clef tattoo.

When it comes to gathering this research, it took some time to dig deeper into finding information, instead of going with what comes to me. Learning this information was much easier with first-hand experience of the process, support and judgement from a wide variety of people, from best friends, to the tattoo artist. I struggled to get my product visible for my teacher, but everything worked out!

If I wanted to mark my own ISU, I would give it a Level 3 because I believe I worked very hard to get the information, and present it in several ways. I also think it is my question that is important. Not everyone can relate to it, but the ones who can, can talk about it. My question is unique from the rest, which makes me more unique, because my tattoos are a big part of my life.

Inquiry Conference: Sharing the Learning

How does the process and outcome of a tattoo affect the way teens are perceived?

I LOVE presentations! I genuinely enjoy making them and presenting them as long as it is a topic I want to talk about. Like an inspiring person, something I want to change, or issues going on in the world. When it comes to my presentation skills, I am able to make the slideshow visibly appealing to the audience, so there is no confusion, and not too many words. I also have a good projecting voice, and I do my best to present myself with full confidence. I need to work on my eye contact, as well as my "and" "ums".

It is VERY difficult to cram a lifelong decision into a 5 minute presentation, as I was unable to cram a lifelong decision into a 5 minute presentation. My speech was clear, I had a variety of pictures and words, I used my body language to the best of my abilities. No notes were used in the presentation, because I practiced every slide, and I had all the information drilled into my head from previous weeks. I should have managed my slides better, but also my question is very opinionated, and I wanted my audience to create an opinion based off of facts.
I was cut off in the third slide and quite disappointed, as this topic is a big part of my life, and wanted my classmates to be aware of that. I now know to pick the key information to put on a timed presentation, and not explain the table of contents.

Putting it Together: Product Creation

How do the process and outcome of tattoos affect the way teens are perceived?

Some things that made me decide on my product was my knowledge on using graphic design programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I know many tips and tricks, I can use multiple pages that have a theme, to create a magazine with all of the information that I have collected. My strengths are colour, font, and layout coordination, keeping information understandable, and with little words.

The product communicates my findings, by quotes, pictures, and facts on pages that are separated in subtopics, so the reader/viewer is understanding all the aspects of a tattoo. My product will communicate that tattoos have a wide-range of opinions, and will get to understand, and encouraging readers to develop a positive perspective on teenagers with tattoos. My products communicates the process before, during and long after getting a tattoo to help build an opinion based on facts.

In this stage, I learned how to work with colours better to match so my product would not look unappealing, or lazy. For example, olive green and mustard yellow do not match. Charcoal grey and teal work well together. I learned to match fonts with the information to maintain a good theme. I learned to manage my time better, I decided to sit and think about my extra curricular's, and assignment due dates, and created a plan so everything can get done, and I can still eat, sleep, and relax. I learned to have a backup plan that does not involve the internet as I almost lost some of my content.

Discovering the Answers: The Research Process

How do the process and outcome of tattoos affect the way teens are perceived?

The difficulties that I am facing during this process, is the fact that there are limited sources on tattoos on teenagers, but more so on young (adults). I am also seeing lots of things about how risky they are with infections, which I don't believe is true. You can only get an infection by an unlicensed artist, and not taking care of it, at all.

How I like to check if my source is reliable, is simply checking the bottom and top of the age to see if there is any publisher names, or dates. I also check for doctor, tattoo, or adolescence wellness based websites. i also look for parents asking questions about their teen wanting a tattoo, and what to do. Since my research includes talking to the people in my life that do not have tattoos, to see what they think of my three tattoos.

I tracked my website my searching up different things such as my research question, "teenagers on tattoos", and "my teen loves tattoos". I also used the databases provided by the BCI library, in the health, wellness, and appearance section. I will also be talking to people I know that have tattoos, and what kind of things and people they face about their ink. If it is one tattoo or twenty, it is a surprise to see how teenagers get treated by the people that surround them.

If I had to do this assignment again, I would pick a more popular topic, such as family, and mental health only because there is so much information on it, and everyone has to deal with it, not everyone gets tattoos and writes about it on the internet. Also, with past experiences with my family, I could create a unique question to work with, as some of my family are immigrants, and we have our own struggles.

Finding a Direction: The Research Question

How do the process and outcome of tattoos affect the way teens are perceived?

I came to choose my final question with the help of my English teacher, Ms. Taylor. My other options were band, and military related. We both thought this topic would have an amazing product, and i'm nothing but excited to gain knowledge on how tattoos effect the way a teenager is perceived by people around them. I am able to relate to tattoos because I got my first tattoo just at the age of fourteen, and two more since then.

I developed the following question, because the way people see my tattoos, is overall positive, but I want to know how many people don't get the same appeal, and why. It impacts my identity because it shows everyone what I am passionate about. For example, my 104 Starfighter tattoo shows that the cadet program is important to me, and it will be with me forever. My Rose tattoo represents my grandmother and who and what she loved. Her name will always be in my heart, and in my name too. The bass clef tattoo represents my passion for music, and being a drummer for as long as I can.

The topic itself makes it a good question, because no matter how much money you spend, a tattoo will always be there. Effective decision making is a key factor in a tattoo, and while dealing with so many changes in a teenagers life, there will be times where you don't make the right choice, and it could just happen to be marked on your body for all to see. Which is why there is an age limit, and parental consent for your first tattoo.
